Social media strategy and policy

One of the main learnings that I gained from the readings in module four is the strong need to develop a social media plan and policy before you begin to build a social media profile. This includes a strategy for how you are to engage with your peers/clients/broader community and how you manage those engagements.

Website design

I have come across Eastern regional library network as part of research for another course and this web page makes we wish I was a member! I belong to the City of Sydney library and their web page is less than inspiring. The list of criteria that I have devised are not that dissimilar to those of Mathews (2009) but also incorporate some of the points raised by Lazaris (2009)  and Schrier (2011) and the ERL page ticks just about every box.

The 4 C's

I watched several one minutes videos on various topics and visited the ASU twitter page, ASU ASU Facebook page and the ASU Flickr page linked on the ASU Library channel page.

The underlying principles of social media technology are the 4 C's. Below are points on how the ASU library channel implements these principles.

Second life

I have created an avatar using Second life. I have to say I am not getting the hang of it.
I found moving around very frustrating and I was not really sure of what I was doing. I appreciate that this is user incompetence and not necessarily the programme. I have to say that after a few frustrating attempts, I have given up! The first life is busy and frustrating enough without having a frustrating virtual version as well!

RSS feeds

The two feeds that I chose are a recipe feed from Taste.com.au and Australian government news and media releases.

Delicious

Delicous is a great tool to be able to store bookmarks that can be retrieved from anywhere. Tagging allows you to group bookmarks according to subject, so they stop being just a list of tags, but an organised group. You are also able to use the tags that others are using to be able to find new resources or join networks to access their tags as well as add your own.

Assessment item 1
(a) Definition of Social networking
Social networks are online platforms which allow people to connect to others to form communities based on shared interests, connections, or similar goals. These networks can be used for social purposes or more formal purposes. It also enables people to share ideas and have people from the community comment, interact and share their ideas. These social networking platforms are most closely identified with Web 2.0, but they were in existence in Web 1.0. I remember as a university student in the early 90's, using DOS based news user groups to connect to people (usually other students from around the world) in news groups who had similar interests. Web 2.0, however, has made this platform more publicly accessible and easier to use. This has enabled the proliferation of the many different types of social networking sites.

(b) Networking sites
I am surprised at the number of networking sites I have accounts on as I would not consider myself to be a social networker. I use these intermittently and in waves of interest. The most frequently accessed is LinkedIn and the Terrific Tensions blog site.

  • Ravelry - a knitting and  networking community. This is for social purposes to connect with other people who share my interest.
  • LinkenIn - a network for professionals who are looking for employment opportunities or to expand their professional network.
  • Facebook - social networking at its most popular and accessible.
  • Flikr - photographic sharing site
  • Twitter - micro blogging site
  • Blogger - blog site - I have set up a blog site for my knitting group Terrific tensions where we can showcase our efforts as well as our graffiti knitting project.
(c) INF506
I expect to understand how to better utilise the social network platform for the organisation I work at, as well as to get a better understanding of what the implications and uses are for individuals. I hope to become more comfortable in their appropriate use - use their power for good!
